Online platforms play an increasingly important role in today’s economy. Platform markets – also called two-sided markets – deliver value to customers and provide economic opportunities for suppliers, but these digital markets also generate substantial economic benefits for the platforms themselves and they introduce novel and often precarious forms of work and economic interaction. At the same time, platforms can also be a means for economic empowerment and growth. In this event, we will present the results of a research sprint with international participants that looked into the opportunities and challenges of one particular type of platform: so-called online labour markets. The event will discuss two questions: First, how can marketable and sustainable skills be identified and tracked that allow online platform workers in local environments to participate in the global online labour market? Second, how can online labour platforms be regulated and managed to improve worker protection & platform infrastructure to enable sustainable and decent work opportunities?
