Christian Katzenbach, Prof. Dr.

Christian Katzenbach ist Professor für Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Bremen und Leiter des Labs „Platform Governance, Media, and Technology“ am Zentrum für Medien-, Kommunikations- und Informationsforschung (ZeMKI). Am HIIG ist er Projektleiter im Programmbereich Digitale Gesellschaft. Von April 2018 bis März 2019 hat er die Professur für Kommunikationspolitik und Medienökonomie an der Freien Universität Berlin vertreten. Seine Dissertation Governance, Technik und Kommunikation (summa cum laude, FU Berlin) wurde mit dem zweijährigen Dissertationspreis der DGPuK und dem Dissertationspreis Medien–Kultur–Kommunikation ausgezeichnet und als Buch (Die Regeln digitaler Kommunikation) veröffentlicht. Im akademischen Jahr 2020-21 ist Christian Fellow am kanadischen Institut National de Recherche Scientifique (INRS) und am Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche sur la Science et la Technologie (CIRST).

Seine Forschung untersucht die Wechselbeziehungen von Kommunikation, Technik und Politik im Kontext der Digitalisierung von Gesellschaft. Schwerpunkte liegen dabei in der konzeptionellen und empirischen Untersuchung der Regulierung und Governance des Internets und von Plattformen, der Rolle von Daten, Algorithmen und Infrastrukturen für die Organisation gesellschaftlicher Kommunikation sowie Diskurse und Regulierung von “Künstlicher Intelligenz”. Zu diesen Forschungsthemen leitet Christian große internationale Drittmittelprojekte, gefördert von DFG, EU-Rahmenprogramm H2020, BMBF, Volkswagen Stiftung und der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung.

Christian arbeitet zudem an strukturellen Fragen von Wissenschaft und Forschung, u.a. als Ko-Initiator des Open Access Journals Internet Policy Review, als Projektleiter eines DFG-Projekts zur nachhaltigen Finanzierung von verlagsunabhängigen Zeitschriften (InnOAccess) und als Sprecher von 2016 bis 2020 der Fachgruppe Digitale Kommunikation der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft. 2016 war er mit-verantwortlich für die erstmalige Ausrichtung der renommierten Konferenz der Association of Internet Researchers (#AoIR) in Deutschland. Seit September 2021 hat Christian die Professur für Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft an der Universität Bremen inne.
