The Concept and Regulation of Data Protection

International workshop
Monday, 18 March & Tuesday, 19 March 2024 | 9:30 – 17:30 (CET)
Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society
Französische Straße 9, 10117 Berlin

The workshop aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of data protection and data protection law, encourage critical thinking, and facilitate discussions on the normative and regulatory dimensions of data protection. Participants will benefit from the expertise of scholars coming primarily from the field of law, but also from other disciplines like philosophy, political science, sociology, or computer science. The knowledge gained will be instrumental to systematize the various postures about the fundamental character of data protection and its regulation for the furtherance of academic discourse and the shaping of future data protection law policy.

About Safe in data traffic: Everyday illustration of fundamental rights at risk

How can we ensure that online advertisers respect our fundamental rights? How can people actively defend themselves against the collection and use of their personal data? Such questions concerning targeted advertising and digital rights have been heatedly debated in public for a long time. As a result, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sets standards to protect people’s fundamental rights on the internet, including their self-determination, non-discrimination and freedom of information.

The research project “Safe in data traffic: Everyday illustration of fundamental rights at risk” (SID) investigates how people can be effectively informed about the potential risks associated with advertisers’ use of their personal data and explores the possibilities for meaningful intervention.
