Indonesia has one of the most biodiverse rainforests in the world, which is of immense value for the local population, as well as the global climate. In order to protect nature, prevent illegal deforestation, and promote sustainable development within the Indonesian Archipelago, digital solutions are increasingly being used. These include the use of drones and satellites to gather data, digital platforms to exchange solutions and best practices, and the use of diverse datasets to build vegetation and climate models. However, the growing importance of digital technologies for sustainable rainforest and climate protection is accompanied by profound challenges related to their deployment and use. We want to address these challenges in this event:
The first part of this event will be an invite-only multi-stakeholder dialogue (MSD) addressing three major challenges with various actors and experts in this field. In the MSD, we firstly discuss how open access to diverse data (e.g. from satellites) can be ensured, because diverse information and the merging of different datasets are essential to promote sustainable development. Additionally, there is a need to transform the open data into concrete and accessible actions in order to allow learning effects. Secondly, we address the aspect of digital literacy – how can digital skills and technologies be trained and implemented in remote regions where the rainforest is of particular importance for local development? What additional digital infrastructure is needed to start new projects and support existing ones? Thirdly, we are looking for best practices on how to fund technology-based rainforest conservation projects. Funding is of particular interest because investments are not only needed to build and harness digital skills and technologies, but also to support and engage local people in local projects so that they can benefit twice, in terms of sustainability and economic empowerment.
The second part of this event will be a panel discussion open to the public, addressing the field of technology-enabled rainforest protection on a broader scope and directed also at interested citizens to foster a public debate about the different possibilities and challenges. The panel will include political and government representatives, technology experts, and representatives of NGOs and conservation projects that work daily to preserve Indonesia’s diverse natural environment.
