The following case is part of the \u201cDigital Innovation in German mid-sized businesses\u201c study, which will be published in 2019. The study is being conducted by HIIG and Sirius Minds and is supported by HypoVereinsbank.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhs-world.com\/\">BHS Corrugated<\/a> has 1,900 employees at its headquarters in Weiherhammer (Bavaria) and currently operates in more than 20 countries worldwide. As a machine engineering firm, BHS created a cloud-based Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform, that efficiently gathers, stores, and analyzes machine data streams. Therefore, BHS customers are enabled to identify bottlenecks, react accordingly, and improve their overall plant productivity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201eWarum sollen wir unbedingt Maschinenbauer bleiben und nicht eine neue Plattform der Zukunft?\u201c<\/em> \u2013 Dr. Christian Schieder, Chief Digital Officer BHS Corrugated<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Die <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhs-world.com\/\">BHS Corrugated Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH<\/a> ist mit 1.900 MitarbeiterInnen an ihrem Hauptsitz in Weiherhammer (Bayern) und in mehr als 20 L\u00e4ndern weltweit pr\u00e4sent. Von Entwicklung und Produktion \u00fcber Installation und Wartung bis hin zu einer Vielzahl an innovativen Servicel\u00f6sungen in den Bereichen Riffelwalzen, Einzelmaschinen, kompletten Wellpappenanlagen oder Industrie 4.0: Als Lifecycle-Partner der Wellpappenindustrie ist das Produkt- und Leistungsspektrum entsprechend breit und gut aufgestellt. Die so genannte Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Plattform der BHS stellt gleichzeitig das digitale Gesicht des Unternehmens gegen\u00fcber den eigenen Kunden dar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eDer Grund, unser Gesch\u00e4ft jetzt zu digitalisieren ist einfach der Tatsache geschuldet, dass es eine sehr viel effizientere Art und Weise ist, Probleme bei Kunden zu l\u00f6sen\u201c, bringt Christian Schieder, Chief Digital Officer der BHS Corrugated, die Motivation des Projektes auf den Punkt.<\/p>\n<p>Im Sekundentakt bezieht die IIoT-Plattform Daten aus den Maschinen und ist dadurch in der Lage m\u00f6gliche Service- oder St\u00f6rungsf\u00e4lle fr\u00fchzeitig zu identifizieren. \u201eDabei werden Datenstr\u00f6me im Umfang von bis zu 3.000 Werten pro Wellpappenanlage und in einer Latenz bis zu einer Sekunde gespeichert\u201c, so CDO Schieder. Diese Datenstr\u00f6me werden durch Machine-Learning-Verfahren auf der Cloud-Plattform gespeichert und bereitgestellt. Dem Kunden wird so die M\u00f6glichkeit er\u00f6ffnet, Produktivit\u00e4ts-Potenziale und Engp\u00e4sse zu erkennen und entsprechend darauf zu reagieren. Nicht nur das positive Feedback der KundInnen, sondern auch deren Zufriedenheit hat einen positiven \u00f6konomischen Effekt auf die gesamte BHS Corrugated. Das Projekt hat nicht nur erreicht, dass die Produktivit\u00e4t der Maschinen auf Kundenseite gesteigert werden konnte, sondern bietet noch weitere Anwendungsgebiete und Potenziale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDas ist ein komplett neues Angebot, das wir in der Vergangenheit nicht hatten. Wir hatten eine Zielerweiterung. Die H\u00e4lfte unseres weltweiten Gesch\u00e4fts spielt sich heute im After-Market ab und nicht mit dem Liefern von irgendwelchen Teilen und Maschinen\u201d, beschreibt Schieder die ver\u00e4nderte Situation.<\/p>\n<p>Der urspr\u00fcnglich erwartete Rahmen an Leistungen und Kenntnissen, die das Projekt mit sich bringen sollte, wurde daher bei Weitem \u00fcbertroffen. Mit Hilfe der Daten steht nicht nur die verbesserte Produktivit\u00e4t der einzelnen Wellpappenanlage im Vordergrund, sondern auch die Steigerung der Effizienz des gesamten Werkes. \u201cWir haben jetzt einen sehr viel breiteren Fokus, als nur technische Probleme an einer Maschine zu l\u00f6sen. Dieses Projekt wird eine wahrhafte digitale Transformation der gesamten BHS Corrugated ausl\u00f6sen\u201d, so Schieder.<\/p>\n<p>Die positiven Nebeneffekte hatten zur Folge, dass das gesamte Thema Digitale Transformation einen ganz neuen Stellenwert innerhalb des Unternehmens bekommen hat. St\u00e4ndig entwickeln sich neue Ideen und Gesch\u00e4ftsmodelle, sodass intern bereits die Frage im Raum steht: \u201cWarum sollen wir unbedingt Maschinenbauer bleiben und nicht eine neue Plattform der Zukunft?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>BHS Corrugated profitiert au\u00dferdem durch Kooperationen mit Startups<\/h2>\n<p>Die Organisation rund um das Digitalisierungsprojekt ist laut Schieder vergleichbar mit der Rolle eines \u201cCorporate Startup\u201d innerhalb der BHS Corrugated. F\u00fcr die Entwicklung und Umsetzung der IIoT-Plattform wurde ein komplett eigener Bereich geschaffen, der sich ausschlie\u00dflich mit den Aufgaben der digitalen Transformation und der Entwicklung von neuen digitalen Gesch\u00e4ftsmodellen besch\u00e4ftigt und somit BHS Corrugated in das digitale Zeitalter f\u00fchrt. Zus\u00e4tzlich arbeitet das Unternehmen in weiteren kooperativen Projekten mit externen Startups zusammen und unterst\u00fctzt diese als Investment-Partner.
