Februar 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>Last year we had a session on open science, this year we talked about citizen science. In the\u00a0citizen science session I presented our current work based on multiple case study research on\u00a0citizen science platforms in Germany.\u00a0I focused on elements that are important for involving\u00a0volunteers in citizen science projects and discussed them in the context of collective\u00a0intelligence. Our second speaker was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturkundemuseum-berlin.de\/institution\/mitarbeiter\/pettibone-lisa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lisa Pettibone<\/a> (Naturkunde Museum, Berlin) who\u00a0presented insights from an online consultation process that is part of creating a 2020 strategy\u00a0for citizen science in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>I particularly enjoyed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communication.northwestern.edu\/faculty\/EszterHargittai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eszter Hargittai<\/a>\u2019s (Northwestern University) talk about the skill divide\u00a0in online participation where she analysed differences in editing behavior on Wikipedia\u00a0between men and women. In another session, she presented interesting findings on internet\u00a0skills among the elderly, showing that financial circumstances have an influence on online\u00a0abilities.<\/p>\n<p>I was impressed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbs.ac.uk\/about\/person\/suzy-moat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suzy Moat<\/a>\u2019s (University of Warwick) excellent keynote about quantifying\u00a0human behavior with internet data. Based on research she conducted with her colleagues, she\u00a0showed that internet users from wealthier countries are more likely to search for information\u00a0about the future, that patterns in searches for financial information on Wikipedia and Google\u00a0might offer clues to subsequent stock market changes, and that people who live in places that\u00a0are perceived as scenic or beautiful tend to report better wellbeing.
