{"id":12941,"date":"2013-07-30T15:24:34","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T15:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/?p=12941"},"modified":"2018-07-10T11:49:27","modified_gmt":"2018-07-10T09:49:27","slug":"summer-fellows-the-relevance-of-algorithms-and-calculated-publics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/summer-fellows-the-relevance-of-algorithms-and-calculated-publics\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer fellows: The Relevance of Algorithms and Calculated Publics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two of our <a title=\"First generation of Summer Fellows\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/first-generation-of-summer-fellows\/\">Summer Fellows<\/a> &#8211; Julian Ausserhofer, a doctoral researcher at the University of Vienna, and Han-Teng Liao of the Oxford Internet Institute &#8211; recently encountered the research paper &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/culturedigitally.org\/2012\/11\/the-relevance-of-algorithms\/\">the relevance of algorithms<\/a>&#8221; by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarletongillespie.org\/\">Tarleton Gillespie<\/a>\u00a0at the journal club of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society.<\/p>\n<p>Julian presented the paper at the weekly gathering of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/people\/?view=doctoral-researcher\">doctoral researchers<\/a>, fellows and guests as the first contribution of all four summer fellows. He published <a href=\"http:\/\/ausserhofer.net\/2013\/07\/the-relevance-of-algorithms-and-calculated-publics\/\">the slides and some notes of the event<\/a> at ausserhofer.net.<\/p>\n<p>Han-Teng on the other hand took his own a approach on the matter and wrote about what he sees as the papers core idea at his own blog, in a post called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/people.oii.ox.ac.uk\/hanteng\/2013\/07\/23\/calculated-publics-hazards-of-meritocracy-in-promising-efficiency-and-rationalism\/\">Calculated publics? Hazards of meritocracy in promising efficiency and rationalism<\/a>&#8220;.
