HIIG was founded in 2012 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hu-berlin.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humboldt University of Berlin<\/a> (HU), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udk-berlin.de\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin University of the Arts<\/a> (UdK) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/wzb.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WZB Berlin Social Science Center<\/a>, together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/leibniz-hbi.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research<\/a> (HBI) in Hamburg as a cooperation partner. Since 2025, three non profit foundations &#8211; the Joachim Herz Foundation, the Mercator Foundation, and the Science and Democracy Foundation &#8211; have been jointly supporting the strategic realignment of the institute and the establishment of new thematic priorities.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How we ensure the independence of our research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Since our foundation, we have been committed to transparency, open dialogue and critical debate. The independence of research is a fundamental prerequisite for our work. This is ensured and continuously optimised through various structural measures:<\/p>\n\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<p>The guiding principles of our research are academic excellence, societal relevance, independence and openness. Research at HIIG is guided by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Richtlinie-WissPraxis-HIIG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HIIG Guidelines to Ensure Good Scientific Practice<\/a>, which are based on the recommendations of the German Research Association (DFG). In addition, we have committed ourselves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Fundraising-Governance-HIIG-English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fundraising Governance Guidelines<\/a>, which underlie our funding agreements.<\/p>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<p>The research agenda and content focus of the institute are developed by HIIG&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/people\/\">research directors<\/a>, who are affiliated with academic institutions. These are then critically monitored and evaluated by an international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/people\/#staff-7\">Scientific Advisory Board<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<li>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<p>Private non-profit foundations provide the HIIG&#8217;s main institutional funding and associated research in the field of the internet and society. A detailed breakdown of all annual funding is published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/pressroom\/downloads\/\">Research Report<\/a> (Appendix) to our HIIG research magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/encore\">encore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tCurrent funders, supporters and partners\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>Thanks to our institutional funders, we can identify social changes at an early stage, critically assess technological developments and encourage their democratic development through agile research in key areas. Through cooperation with other public and private funding bodies, numerous<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/research\/\"> research projects<\/a>, supported many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/people\/\">researchers<\/a>, formed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiig.de\/en\/network-of-centers\/\">broad research network<\/a>, and established pioneering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiig.de\/events\/\">formats for a better exchange of knowledge<\/a> with politics, business, and civil society.
