Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Society

New technologies are transforming the way economies and societies innovate and operate within a rapidly changing, globally interconnected digital environment. Against this backdrop, the Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Society (IES) research focus brings together scholars from different disciplines such as economic sociology, entrepreneurship, marketing, innovation and organization studies. It investigates how different forms of innovation and entrepreneurship can address systemic societal challenges such as climate change, social inequality and demographic shifts. It also considers how these challenges, in turn, shape social, political and institutional contexts. Through theoretically grounded, interdisciplinary research, we generate actionable insights, pioneer unconventional methods, and develop research-based recommendations across sectors. Our work integrates perspectives from policy, economy and civil society early on in the research process to align research questions with pressing societal challenges and ongoing socio-economic transformations. In doing so, the research focus area contributes to system-level innovation and helps to keep pace with the complexity and dynamism of the digital economy. This includes supporting efforts to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, unlock digital potential and develop an entrepreneurial mindset and capacity for action.

Entrepreneurship in Society

How can entrepreneurial thinking and action be embedded in society?

This research area builds on past research into social media governance, AI governance, Internet governance, the international law of the internet and the constitutionalization of online communication spaces. It aims to identify ethical frameworks and governance approaches that can guide the development and application of emerging technologies. These include quantum technologies, autonomous systems, synthetic biology, brain-computer interfaces and neurotechnologies, as well as planetary climate interventions, space technologies and energy transition technologies.

AI and Work

What are the potential implications of using generative and predictive AI systems in the workplace?

The focus here lies on how AI systems are implemented in organisational practice and how they affect occupational fields, organisations and workers. We analyse the conditions under which AI can be adopted in economically viable and socially sustainable ways. This includes tensions arising during the adoption process, for instance between workers and managers, entrenched routines and emerging practices, or between organizational objectives, professional standards and evolving ethical and regulatory expectations?

Platforms and Ecosystems

How do digital platforms function and compete, and how do they reshape markets, work and entrepreneurship?

Digital platforms are examined as a novel and innovative organisational form operating in multi-sided markets and complex technology ecosystems. We analyse competitive dynamics within and across platform ecosystems, their effects on traditional industries, employment and entrepreneurship. In addition, we investigate how generative AI influences and reshapes the operational logic of dominant platforms, and which economic and societal dynamics emerge as a result. Finally, the risks, opportunities, and possible alternatives of current platform ecosystems are analysed.
