This blog article presents the prototype of an online publication design for the recently published study “Kooperationen zwischen Startups und Mittelstand” of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). We illustrate the concept of a multi-layer design, examples of developed features and finally have a look at further perspectives. We started to challenge the narrative of academic online-publications by following the premise of “form follows function”. How should scientific reports be designed with the internet as the primary distribution channel in mind?
