Mareile Kaufmann, PhD

Mareile is a fellow at the research programme “Evolving Digital Society”. While being here, she takes a closer look at the political dimensions of algorithms and digital counter-cultures.

Generally, she is interested in digital technology and their dialogue with the many facets of society, more specifically in understandings of crime in digitized societies, practices of surveillance and of avoiding surveillance (e.g. hacking, steganography), and representations of all of the above in art projects.

Usually, she teaches and works as a post doc at Oslo University (Criminology) and as a senior researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo, where she headed the security research group for many years and still co-leads the working group “Digital Matters” at NordSteva, a NordForsk Center of Excellence.

Mareile studied Cultural Studies, Criminology and Sociology in Frankfurt/Oder and Hamburg. Her PhD dealt with concepts of resilience in societies that are connected to the Internet.

During the past years, she visited the Political Science Department at the University of Essex, the Norwegian Center at the University of California in Berkeley, the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zürich, the International Centre for Comparative Criminology at Université de Montréal.

Mareile received several grants for collaborative and personal projects, the latest of which is the Critical Data Network in June 2018, a network that focuses on both, the criticality of and the critical perspective on digital information.
