Call for projects: Participate in our Impact AI Assessment

Are you using an AI system to support a societal cause and sustainability? Do you want to better understand the impact of your AI system on society and the environment? Then apply to become one of the next projects to be assessed by Impact AI!

About Impact AI

Impact AI is seeking organisations (NGOs, companies or research institutions) with AI projects to participate in a voluntary impact assessment. The transdisciplinary research project, located at HIIG, has developed the Impact AI Method, a holistic and structured impact assessment. The project works in partnership with Greenpeace Germany and Economy for the Common Good (ECOnGOOD). The method offers a holistic and structured impact assessment. By applying it to individual AI projects, we generate evidence on the societal and environmental impacts of using AI systems and bring new insights to the debate on AI for sustainability and the public interest.

Why participate?

  • You will benefit from an independent, non-commercial outside perspective, with feedback on many details of your project. This offers scope for learning and improvement in the areas of sustainability and public interest impact. Our assessment builds on the UN’s principles for the Ethical use of Artificial Intelligence, so our feedback is aligned with these internationally established principles.
  • You will benefit from many aspects of self-reflection that are part of our assessment and that sometimes get lost in day-to-day work. These reflections can give you a coherent mandate to drive change internally.
  • You will benefit from an overview of the technical details of your AI system, model and the data used. We provide this overview to you as PDF and CSV file, and you can use it as documentation to increase transparency for users and other stakeholders.
  • You will benefit from additional feedback from users of your AI system, as we will interview them where possible. This feedback can also help to improve the design of your AI system and your project overall.
  • You will benefit from increased attention to your organisation and AI project through communication about the assessment, a published impact assessment report and academic publications.

What we are looking for

We are looking for applications to this call from organisations that are using an AI system to support a societal goal. We are investigating AI use cases working towards sustainability or contributing to positive societal change. In the past, we have investigated projects in the field of AI for democracy. For example, we have assessed Full Fact AI,  an AI-supported software for fact-checking. The use cases we assess can address a wide range of societal issues. However,  societal benefit (rather than of profit maximization) should be at the centre of the project . That said, we are interested in projects by both non-profit and for-profit organisations. An important criterion for taking part in our research is that the AI system is fully operational and that you (or others) expect it to remain deployed for at least another year.

What to expect after your application

We will examine all applications and make a selection in collaboration with our partners. We will notify the projects we select for the impact assessment.

The impact assessment works as follows:

  • First call: We will get to know each other and discuss the details of a potential collaboration.
  • Provision of information: We will send you a survey about the technical details of your AI system, model and the data used. Additionally, we will ask you for several documents that we will assess.
  • Interviews: We will conduct at least four interviews, each lasting around one hour. One will be with a technical lead and three with an organisational lead from your organisation.
  • Visit: In some cases, we would like to visit you on site to better understand your AI project and the workflows around it. We may also conduct additional interviews with users and applicants of the system.
  • Assessment: Once we have gathered all necessary information, we will assess it and compile an impact assessment report. We are happy to discuss the findings with you and, where possible, provide feedback.

How to participate?

If you are interested in participating in our impact assessment, we need some information about your AI use case and your organisation.

Please note that we may not have the capacity to assess every project that applies, and that our feedback may take several months. Projects for the impact assessment will be selected in collaboration with our partners, and we will contact you if your project is selected.

Interested but want to know more about our research? Join one of our information calls on 4 November 2026, 2 December 2026 or 13 January 2027, each at 2.30pm. To participate, please click here (no registration is required).
