FAQ – Doctoral Positions

The Doctoral Position is tendered as a part-time job. Is it possible to be employed elsewhere during the course of the programme?

The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society raises no objections, if you wish to do a side job. We do however expect that you will set your top priority on obtaining your doctorate. Please make sure to integrate in your decision on any secondary employment that you might possibly need a time frame for interviews or intensive research within the given 2 years, and that we also expect you to take part in conferences. You will also need to retain a certain degree of flexibility to take part in fixed voting / presentation meetings throughout the programme and sundry events of the institute, moreover to meet our endeavours to integrate our doctoral candidates into the scientific community to the best of our ability. This should be compatible with the side job.

How much time do I have to finish my doctorate?

The position is limited to two years, during which the doctorate ought to be gained. In exceptional and duly justified cases, we may possibly grant an extension for a maximum of 12 months.

Which reference shell I submit best?

Please submit 1-2 references. First and foremost this should be a letter of reference informing us about your scientific working. We also appreciate other testimonials or references so as to get an impression of you and how you are estimated.

Do I need to submit references anonymously? How can I submit a reference anonymously if required?

We do not need references to be anonymous – you can upload all documents online directly. If the person providing the reference would like to send us a document directly, we would like to ask for an email to Miss Carina Breschke with the subject line “reference for –your name–“ so that we can match it appropriately.

Which aspects does the Exposé of the dissertation project need to include?

Show us what your special research interests are and convince us of how you will realise your research project within the next two years – that should be the goal of your Exposé of 3 pages at max! You can find further suggestions on how to create an Exposé for a doctorate e.g. on the Internet.

Who reviews applications?

The directors of the institute, the project supervisors of the research group Innovation & Entrepreneurship and representatives of the research associates of the institute’s various research areas will assess the applications received.

When are chosen candidates notified?

We will review all documents dedicatedly and will contact you, if any further information is needed. Due to the high number of applicants, we can neither inform you about the current status, nor react to requests regarding individual applications during the course of our review.

I do not live in Germany, could I possibly conduct the interview via skype?

Yes that is possible. We very much appreciate the chance to get to know applicants in person, but we do of course understand that not all applicants may travel to Berlin for the interviews. We endeavor to provide skype appointments matching the different time zones the best possible.

What if I do not live in Berlin? Is it possible to work remote?

The workplace is in Berlin. We do expect the applicants to move to Berlin (or surroundings) to the beginning of the programme. To be sure, we do use skype, have hangouts or telkos and alike, but we also appreciate to communicate directly and regularly, moreover strive to closely involve all doctoral candidates in the programme and in our activities.

Will I receive updates on the status of my application before final decisions are made?

What does “enrolment … within the first 6 months“ mean?

In order to gain your doctorate at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, you will need to enroll at the Humboldt University or at the University of Arts Berlin within 6 months after the beginning of the programme. We will support you in this process. If you have already started your doctorate at a different university, you may remain enrolled there.
