SUMMARY:XV. Interdisciplinary Workshop: Privacy\, Data Protection & Surveil
 lance
DESCRIPTION:The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society k
indly invites for the fifteenth interdisciplinary workshop “Privacy\, Da
ta Protection &amp\; Surveillance”\, which will take place on July 18\,
2023 from 12:00pm to 6:00pm at the Institute’s premises. You should unde
rstand German\, but are very welcome to give your presentation in English.
 \n\n&nbsp\;\nXV. INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP: PRIVACY\, DATA PROTECTION &am
 p\; SURVEILLANCE\n18 July 2023 | 12:00pm – 6:00pm\nAlexander von Humbold
t Institute for Internet and Society\, Französische Str. 9\, 10117 Berlin
\n&nbsp\;\n\nWith this workshop\, we want to offer particularly young rese
archers the opportunity to present and discuss current research work from
the very broad and diverse research field of privacy\, surveillance\, and
data protection in an interdisciplinary environment. We welcome article an
d dissertation projects\, theoretical and empirical work\, analyses as wel
l as proposed solutions from all disciplines – and it may explicitly be
work in progress. In addition to the discussion of open research questions
\, the workshop will particularly focus on the critical reflection of the
participants’ own research premises\, school(s) of thought\, and discipl
ine(s).\n\nThis summer\, we want to ‘celebrate’ the 10th anniversary o
f the Snowden revelations. It seems that not much has changed: Mass survei
llance has not gone away\, the public-private surveillance cooperation is
thriving. With chat control\, the most recent blow on end-to-end encryptio
n\, a new warrantless mass surveillance measure is about to be introduced
in the EU\, this time with the argument of protecting children from groomi
ng. Hacking tools like Pegasus are used by a wide range of governments\, i
ncluding against political opponents\, human rights defenders\, and journa
lists. The safeguards are apparently having no effect. For example\, the I
ndependent Control Council for the German Federal Intelligence Service (BN
 D) has only ever objected to one of 121 surveillance applications. Have we
learned nothing from the 2013 scandal? What is the state of the surveilla
nce society? What can we do? What approaches\, concepts and means can help
protect us from the encroaching state – and their allies in the private
sector\, as the Twitter Files have just shown again?\n\n&nbsp\;\nParticip
ation\nIf you are interested in attending the event\, please fill in our r
egistration form at the bottom of this page by Monday\, June 26\, 2023 at
the latest\, indicating whether you would like to attend as a listener or
as a speaker. Speakers are asked to provide a title and an extended abstra
ct (approx. 800 words) of the presentation\, which should last max. 15 min
utes. You are also welcome to provide information about your disciplines\,
areas of interest\, and research interests. Within the general topic\, yo
u are completely free to choose your subject and to set a focus for your p
resentation\, even beyond our proposed focus.\n\nThe workshop program will
be sent to all registered participants by 11 July\, 2023.\n\nWe are very
much looking forward to your participation and contribution.\n\n&nbsp\;\nT
