SUMMARY:Multi-Stakeholder Internet Governance Models\, Mechanisms and Issue
 s
DESCRIPTION:A Network of Centers (NoC) Event in the Series on the Collabora
tive Internet Governance Ecosystem hosted by the Center for Technology and
Society of FGV Law School Rio de Janeiro (CTS/FGV)\, in partnership with
the Research Group on Law and Innovation of FGV Law School São Paulo.\nIn
troduction\nIn April 2014\, Brazil has offered to host the Global Multi-St
akeholder Meeting on the Future of Internet Governance\, to pursue consens
us about universally acceptable Internet governance principles and to prop
ose a roadmap for the further evolution of the Internet Governance institu
tional ecosystem. Internet Governance is in a defining moment. In 2015\, t
en years after the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)\, stakeh
olders will gather to discuss what has been achieved and what is the way f
orward. Until then\, several UN specialized agencies will be holding event
s under the WSIS review process\, including an ITU Plenipotentiary Confere
nce later this year. By the end of 2014\, the UN General Assembly will dec
ide if the mandate of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) should be review
ed\, while it also continues to address the problem of mass surveillance.
The upcoming meeting in Brazil will be an important milestone for the proc
ess\, and its outcomes should feed into the overall WSIS review process\,
although it is still unclear how this will happen.\n\nSo far discussions h
ave been highly politicized and have shown entrenched viewpoints. There is
room for a long-term and interdisciplinary academic reflection about poss
ible frameworks for Internet governance. In 2013 a considerable number of
academic organizations have decided to redirect their efforts to study Int
ernet governance related aspects. Calls for studies and papers have been o
pened in an unprecedented manner. Enhancing academic dialogue is fundament
al to create synergies among research initiatives and avoid duplication of
efforts.\nGoals\nThe goals of the this roundtable are:\n\n To foster str
onger ties among academic institutions\;\n To develop a synthesis of disc
ussions following the Brazil conference\, which could contribute to effort
s aimed at channeling the outcomes from the Brazilian meeting into other s
paces\, such as the IGF and the overall WSIS review process\;\n To reflec
t on possible frameworks for Internet Governance and evaluate them against
widely accepted principles (eg. the need to preserve the interoperability
and stability of the Internet)\;\n To foster the convergence between aca
demics in the area of social science and technology\;\n To identify gaps
for further research in the field.\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\nFriday\, 25 April 2014
