Christian Katzenbach, Prof. Dr.
Christian Katzenbach is Professor of Media and Communication at the University of Bremen and Head of the Lab „Platform Governance, Media, and Technology“. He is an associated researcher at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). Previously, he headed the research programme The Evolving Digital Society. Previously, he was interim professor for communication policy and media economics at the Institute for Media and Communication Research at Freie Universität Berlin and chair of the Section Digital Communication of the German Communication Association. Christian studied media and communication studies, philosophy, and computer science in Berlin, Madrid and Potsdam. His research addresses the intersection of technology, communication, and governance. Christian is the recipient of multiple awards, including the biannual award of the German Communication Association for the best dissertation in the field in 2016 and 2017 for his conceptual work on governance, technology, and communication. In the academic year 2020-21, Christian is a fellow at the Canadian Institut National de Recherche Scientifique (INRS) and the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche sur la Science et la Technologie (CIRST).
Focus areas of his research are the governance and regulation of platforms, discourses and governance of “artificial intelligence” and the increasing role of data, algorithm and digital infrastructures in organising communication and social interactions. On these themes, Christian is leading international research projects, funded by the German Research Foundation, the EU Framework Programme H2020, the German Ministry of Education and Research, the Volkswagen Foundation and other organisations.
Christian also contributes to building sustainable structures and networks that make research more accessible and collaborative. He is a co-initiator of the open access journal Internet Policy Review and PI of a research project on sustainable funding of scholar-led open access journals. Currently, Christian is co-initiating a research network in the field of platform governance and building the “Platform Governance Archive” – a longitudinal corpus of platform policies. Christian was co-responsible for hosting the 2016 conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in Berlin – for the first time in Germany. Since September 2021 Christian holds the professorship for Communication and Media Studies at the University of Bremen.
