Anja Adler, Dr.
Anja Adler is the vice-head of the project team for the Third Engagement Report at HIIG. The third engagement report is a report on civic engagement for the German Federal Government, which is commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ). In her former role, Anja has already supported the HIIG project Decide in is political communication and development.
Over the past ten years Anja has been passionatly advocating for more and better participation in her role as freelancing author, facilitator and project developer. Thanks to her interdisciplinary education Anja researches at the intersection of theory and practice, thereby perfecting the crossing of boundaries: she is involved enough to gain everyday knowledge and distant enough to critically reflect on her role and challenge her perspective. With her applied research she has collaborated with organisations like the Robert Bosch Foundation, Mercator Foundation, Wigwam, Betterplace Lab or Wikimedia to better understand the effects of digitalisation on civic participation and vice versa. With her own collective Open State she additionally develops her own projects called real-life laboratories to explore forms of sustainable, decentral and non-hierarchical collaboration.
Anja studied communication und cultural studies in Berlin und Bloomington, USA, followed by a PhD on the role of political online participation at the NRW School of Governance with Prof. Christoph Bieber and Prof. Karl-Rudolf Korte. Her book “Liquid Democracy in Deutschland” has been published in 2018.
As co-captain of the DIY-raft Panther Ray Anja loves to conquer the alternative urban open spaces for herself and others in her freetime.
