German Network of Institutes for Digitalisation Research (NIfD)

The digital transformation of society is one of the greatest challenges of our time. There is a particularly high demand for independent and interdisciplinary research with a long-term orientation in order to fundamentally scientifically analyze and help shape the diverse conditions, forms and consequences of the digital transformation. Several interdisciplinary research institutions in Germany have been working closely together since 2021 and have founded the Network of Institutes for Digitalisation Research (NIfD).

Network objectives

Each institution contributes its own profile and special research focus to the network. This diversity fosters competition and creates numerous opportunities for collaboration, which is an important driver of quality and innovation in digitisation research. The network aims to utilise synergies and avoid duplication of research. Various exchange formats have been developed for this purpose. Regular networking meetings are held on a rotating basis at partner institutions, enabling exchange at different levels, from institute management to communication, transfer and research infrastructure teams.

The network strengthens cooperation between partners, specifically supporting interdisciplinary careers through joint events, qualification programmes, and exchange opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Close coordination ensures that common interests are represented, new collaborations are initiated, and dialogue in science communication and transfer is intensified.

„Scientific progress is not the work of individuals; it is the result of many people working together and encouraging each other. Every new perspective and discovery in one field of science has an impact on all the others.“

Alexander von Humboldt
