Alexandra Giannopoulou, PhD in law, is an associate researcher at the Institute for
Communication Sciences (ISCC), within the research group Information and
Commons Governance in Paris, France.
She is a graduate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and of the University of
Paris West Nanterre La Defense. She holds a PhD from the University of Paris II
Pantheon-Assas, which was presented on December 2016. Her PhD thesis entitled
“The Creative Commons licenses” and supervised by Professor Jérôme Huet
evaluates the legal status of the Creative Commons licenses on an international,
European, and national level and assesses the reformative power of Creative
Commons as a transnational copyright management system in the current normative
During her doctoral studies, Alexandra was a visiting researcher at Stanford Law
School supervised by Professor Paul Goldstein (2012) and a junior lecturer (ATER) at
the University of Paris West Nanterre la Défense (2014-2016).
Alexandra’s research focuses on the legal frameworks and policies surrounding the
digital commons. In particular, her research investigates open access and open data
movements in the context of the scientific commons. She also examines the
harmonisation of text and data mining policies and legal infrastructure. Her copyright
research focuses on the public domain and on the current European copyright reform.
In that regard, she has collaborated with organisations such as Communia and
Wikimedia as a copyright expert. Alexandra also works on privacy issues concerning
algorithmic technology applications and the blockchain. During her fellowship at
HIIG, she will research machine-generated data within the context of scientific
research as well as legal issues stemming from blockchain applications for open
