Dear friends and fellow researchers,

We’re all internet explorers! Making sense of the digital society means the moment you solve a problem or complete a project, new ones are already lying ahead. There is so much more to discover in the digital sphere, so we’re once again encouraging young researchers to apply for our Fellowship Program 2019 and become a part of the institute’s team. Just in case you missed playing open access minigolf during the Long Night of the Sciences, there is another chance to explore open science: we look forward to raising our glasses with you in September when Internet Policy Review – our open access journal on internet regulation – celebrates its fifth anniversary.

HIIG is also exploring new ways of engaging stakeholders and the public in our research: have a look at our brand-new video series Meet the HIIGsters and discover our new Instagram channel for digital mavericks and internet researchers. Last but not least, you should get prepared for a splendid continuation of our high-profile lecture series featuring Stephen Graham, Shoshana Zuboff and Nick Couldry!

RESEARCH AND ACTIVITIES

Telemedicine | New Research Project

Technological paradigms such as IoT and AI are increasingly integrated into eHealth applications, also promoting medical (self-)surveillance and control. The new research project “The Futures of Telemedicine: Knowledge, Policy, Regulation” – funded by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation through a research fund provided by Cisco Systems – asks: What are the challenges for legislation and regulation? How can we critically assess the collected data?

Ideas for Democracy in Europe | Funding

We proudly announce that Advocate Europe has decided to fund our project “Digital Identity, Citizenship & Democracy in Europe”! Out of the 475 proposals from 42 countries, the expert jury selected seven winning ideas. By using blockchain technology, we will prototype an e-polling model that gives citizens a digital identity and boosts participation through random sample voting on EU questions.

Smart Energy | Project Completion

The digital world enables users and customers of smart energy technologies to play a central role in the innovation and transformation process. In their concluding study, HIIG researchers Matti Große, Hendrik Send and Tanja Loitz from co2online called for an improved framework for collaboration. At their Symposium on 22 June, the results were discussed in public.

People | Meet the HIIGsters

We’re growing! New members of our team include Alina Wernick and Thomas Christian Bächle, who will be working on our new eHealth project; Nicolas Frederici; associate researcher Gert G. Wagner; visiting researchers Alfred Früh, Clara Iglesias Keller and Mareile Kaufmann; the institute’s fellows Martin J. Riedl and Natalie Pompe; and lots of new students. Also, Rebecca Kahn has been selected as a new Open Science Fellow.

Internet and Society | Fellowship Program

Are you tech-savvy and fascinated by questions revolving around internet and society? Then we encourage you to apply for our 2019 Fellowship Program! Our institute in the heart of Berlin provides a dynamic intellectual environment for junior and senior researchers to pursue their own research interests and actively shape their stay. The deadline for applications is 1 September 2018.

PUBLICATIONS

Platform Regulation | New Discussion Paper

What is the role of online platforms in conflicts between freedom of communication and personal rights – both de facto and legally? What are the consequences of a curation of content at the intermediary level? Germany aims to address these and other issues with the Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG). In a recent paper, Wolfgang Schulz presents the regulatory concept of the NetzDG and discusses what a human rights–friendly solution might look like.
