Dear friends and fellow researchers,

This month we bring you a newsletter full of exciting developments in our research activities. From tackling hostility towards scientists to examining the essential human support behind automation, our institute is exploring the pressing questions of our time. How can we develop effective strategies for designing business-to-business platforms? What are the best approaches to theorising digital societies and creating engaging formats for communicating science to the general public? These and other important issues are explored below.

Stay informed and inspired as you explore new ideas and perspectives,

RESEARCH & ACTIVITIES

Hostility towards scientists | Survey and trainings

A new survey of 2,600 academics shows that hostility towards science is a manifest problem. But how can they protect themselves from attacks and defamation? Our research team has developed new formats to help researchers deal with hostility in the future. These include a train-the-trainer programme for university communication officers and a summer school for young scientists.

Anti-polarisation learning | New project

This project consortium aims to educate people about the process of polarisation and how to counteract it in real life. It will develop game-based learning opportunities that enable participants to learn dialogue skills and respect different perspectives in a safe environment. Young people will be trained as “bridge builders” to help build resilient European democracies that are able to deal with …

Obstacles to diamond open access | New project

The challenge of sustainably financing open access publications is still unresolved. Many believe that public funds can legitimately be used to purchase goods and services but not to finance scientific texts that are already available free of charge. This project investigates how the diamond open access publication model can be organised in Germany in the long term. So how can we enable …

B2B platforms | Strategies for designing and growing

The development and growth of business-to-business (B2B) platforms is complex. Due to their unique nature, they require a different management approach than consumer-oriented platforms (X2C). This paper examines how these platforms can thrive in Germany and provides a management framework for practitioners. The authors identify three strategic initiatives that go …

Privacy icons | Effective transparency and controls

Creating understandable privacy information builds user trust and provides a competitive advantage. However, the task of balancing legal, visual and user experience design is a complex one. This paper explores how privacy icons can be designed as part of effective transparency and user control. The authors present a model that meets the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation.

Imagining desirable futures | Prospective theorising

This paper argues that organisational scholars need to work together to develop theories that are future-oriented, imaginative and value-driven. However, the conundrum of the future is that we need to conceptualise and theorise something that is not (yet) observable and does not (yet) exist. The authors therefore propose prospective theorising as a solution that allows us …

AI Compass | English version now available

To explain AI to civil society, we have developed a new Open Educational Resource (OER): the AI Compass. Your mission in it is to find out what problems can really be solved by AI systems. This is not just about fun and entertainment, but also about taking a realistic look at active AI systems. You can print the game yourself on A4 paper or have it professionally printed in a hard cardboard box.

Autonomous systems & interfaces | Workshop

The autonomy of autonomous systems depends on human-machine interfaces and system-environment interactions. This workshop explores humanities approaches to robotics, including sociology, media studies, and the history of science. By examining various systems, it aims to analyse autonomy processes and highlight the potential of humanities research on robots and AI.
| The workshop will take place on 4 July at HIIG.
